To quote Bob Dylan, the times they are a-changin' Many of us have been in technology long enough to have experienced the full adoption cycle of both email and web 1.0 technologies. It is amazing to think back on the mid-90s when we were struggling with questions of how much of a role email can or should serve in our learning, personal, and business lives; whether the World Wide Web could someday become a trustworthy source for information; and whether this e-commerce thing might someday take off. The first one now will later be last... As happens, what was once cutting edge and revolutionary is now commonplace - and even mundane - as we've worked these technologies into the daily fabric of our lives. Could you imagine having a conversation today in your workplace about whether email is acceptable or useful? Or attempting to get information about any product or service and not visiting a website? Please get out of the new one if you can't lend a hand... As also happens, we've arrived at the leading edge of the next cycle. Compare what it felt like in 1995 to where we are today: the adoption of tablets and prevalence of mobile computing; Apple's initiative to bring publishing to the masses the same way they disrupted old-school software development and distribution; the proliferation of network connectivity and always-on devices; a movement toward "cloud" services; and perhaps most of all, the rise of "social" everything. We are, once again, grappling with a range of new technologies that promise to fundamentally change the way we relate to each other and the world. We are grappling with new questions and concerns that simply didn't exist five years ago. And again, we're figuring this
out as the technology itself matures and changes almost daily. Looking ahead This is a time when many organizations start to make plans for the next year. Doing so can be particularly challenging in the early phase of new technology introductions, as we are now. Fortunately, there's some great stuff out there, and Aptiris remains focused on our goal of advancing communications. In addition to exciting developments planned for FirstClass (see the roadmap announcement, below), we've also begun providing services for Google Apps for Education and Google Apps for Business. In education, we're seeing the introduction of exiting platforms such as Edsby, a tool for parent & student engagement, and Showbie, enabling mobile assignment and class management. Please let us know as you're looking ahead -- we look forward to planning a path together. |
