NetApp Features
Data ONTAP

Data ONTAP is the operating system that provides the powerful feature set for all NetApp hardware.  With a single operating system used across the entire NetApp product line, enterprises can deploy a single NetApp or  a range of units as required, with cross-compatibility and a single interface to manage all devices.

Data ONTAP provides a virtualized data environment with a simple interface that enables you to create virtual storage volumes, make changes quickly, and achieve superior storage utilization.

Multi-Protocol

NetApp devices can be used simultaneously in both SAN and NAS configurations.  With support for CIFS, NFS, and iSCSI protocols, NetApp allows you to select the connection type and configuration best suited to each of your production applications.

Software Features

Below are a few of the software features made possible with NetApp Data ONTAP:

Feature
Function
Benefit
FlexVol
Creates flexibly sized LUNS and volumes across a large pool of disks and one or more RAID groups.
Ensures your storage systems are used at maximum efficiency and reduces your hardware investment.  Add storage over time as you need it, rather than purchasing or reserving unnecessary capacity up front.
Snapshot
Makes incremental, data-in-place, point-in-time copies of a LUN or volume with minimal performance impact.
Enables you to create frequent, space-efficient backups with no disruption to data traffic.
SnapRestore
Rapidly restores single files, directories or entire LUNs and volumes from any Snapshot backup.
Instantaneously recovers your files, databases, and complete volumes from your backup.
FlexClone
Instantaneously creates LUN and volume clones without requiring additional storage.
Saves time in testing and development and increases your storage capacity.
Deduplication
General-purpose deduplication for removal of redundant data objects.
Reduces the amount of storage you need to purchase and maintain.
SnapMirror
Enables automatic, incremental data replication between systems in either synchronous or asynchronous mode.
Provides flexibility and efficiency when mirroring for data distribution and disaster recovery.
